This music, like fine wine, has laid fermenting for almost one quarter of a century. That was the beginning of Jerry Garcia’s formal music training. Legion of Mary, now known by all, was at the time the last of great underground bands. Spearheaded by Jerry Garcia and compatriot Martin

Fierro, with the incredible backings of bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Merle Saunders, and drummer Ron Tutt, they toured the country with great success. The evidence of which still exists in tapers collections and music aficionado’s hearts. Martin Fierro felt it was necessary to bring back that spirit and joy that was experienced by all.

One of the incidents that bears this out, was the time that the band arrived in the Boston area to play a show only to discover that the marquee outside read "Closed for Repairs". Of course, the show was a sell-out, no advertising necessary, and the theater was looking to minimize the number of fans needing "miracles" that would throng outside. Or there was also the

time that Legion of Mary was playing the Bottom Line in New York City, when a certain friend of Jerry’s dropped in to pass the evening gooving on the music. Let’s face it… John Lennon knew a good thing when he heard it!

So, once again, Legion of Mary arises to keep the musical legacy alive. Each of the players in this incarnation are true practitioners of their craft.

Martin Fierro has been associated with the original Legion of Mary, the Grateful Dead, Zero, Mother Earth, and more. This man has been around forever, has played with just about anyone you could name, and is one of the true saxophone greats!

Alex Baum, one of the most excellent bassists, has done stints with Zero and Dan Hicks & His Acoustic Warriors, among others.

Another of the great "old pros" has to be Ray Scott. This man is absolutely one of the greatest unknown guitar players. He performed with both Jerry Garcia and the Keith & Donna band, where he spent many an evening producing leads with fine tones and textures, right next to the legend himself. Now you can find Ray as an instructor at Stanford University, where he passes on the knowledge of the strings.

Wayne De La Cruz is a well known Northern California based keyboard player who sits in with many bands of many styles and can hold his own in any ivory tickling session. Both Paul Spina, the drummer, and Kenny Simeone, the lead vocalist and guitarist, are also from the Northern California hotbed of music. Paul has been curing the skins with several groups, while Kenny has been looking for the light and now it shines on him with his high pitched voice, reminiscent of the tones of the original songster.

So now… it’s your turn to see what happens when the best musicians let loose on music that is at once rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz but mostly just plain wonderful!
