Band
Equipment
Bobby Vega - Bass
Bobby has several setups depending on the demands of the event:
- A Fender Jazz Bass strung with D'Addario strings, played through
a Peavey Mark 3 amplifier with a 115 Boogie cabinet for the bottom and a
Seymour-Duncan 8-5 cabinet for the highs.
- Bobby has two Modulus basses:
1- VJ (Vintage Jazz), quilt maple, chrome hardware, transparent amber, fretless.
2- VJ , flame, chrome hardware, transparent amber, fretted.
- A Glockenklang 300 W solid state class A Bass Art amp and Cabinet.
The Bass Art Cabinet is a 2-way bass with a 15'" woofer and a 2" domed tweeter.
- Acoustic 360 with a Fender Bassman 212 cabinet loaded with JBL K-120's.
Bobby endorses D'Addario Strings and Peavey amplifiers.
Martin Fierro - Sax, Vocals
In addition to tenor sax, Martin adds to the Zero sound
with the hurio, maracas, cowbells and other percussion instruments.
Chip Roland - Keyboards, Vocals
Chip plays a 1959 Hammond M3 played through a modified Leslie 145 powered
by a 1967 Fender Dual Showman. He also uses an early 70's Wurlitzer electric
piano powered by a 1974 Musicman 212 amp. The Wurlitzer also splits
through an Echoplex to the Leslie.
Steve Kimock's Gear
Steve has no currently available production gear. Often the gear that
appears on stage is only there because it:
- Needed to fly in a case and it had one.
- Had no case and showed up in a truck.
- Was the only piece that would fit in whatever ride was available.
- Steve just got it and was trying to blow it up.
Any of the stuff that shows up on stage shows up because it was the only way
to go, logistically, for that gig, and in no way constitutes an endorsement or
even a recommendation.
- Nothing on stage with a logo on it or in a seemingly recognizable
configuration is what it says it is. (Steve has been tinkering non-stop
with this science project for 18 years.)
- Everything that looks homemade is.
- Kids, don't try this at home!
- The main guitar at most gigs is a 1960 Strat, rosewood board, old dan
electro pickups, 3-way switch, no tone control, strung 14. 18. 28w. 38. 49. 64.
(no shit) tuned to concert pitch.
- SO's Supro Ozark, stock. Strung 13. 17. 26w. 36. 46. 56., tuned F C F A
C F, low to high.
- Guitar Lab Explorer circa 1970, tuned to pitch and strung the same as
the Supro.
- Various lap steels: Supro, Oahu, National, Gibson in various tunings
mostly strung dobroish with a .16 for the high string and then whatever,
depending.
That stuff shows up at 99% of Zero shows. There is a rotating roster of
other junk including: Harmony Rockets, Vega Archtop, Mustangs, Avalon
Bass, misc. cheesy Fenders and stuff too weird to mention.
Tunings change often.
Strings are almost always HEAVY.
Steve uses and endorses D'Addario strings exclusively. That is the only
thing that doesn't change from gig to gig.
There's just too much stuff to go into a lot of detail here, but
Steve would be happy to try to answer any questions you might have.

Greg Anton - Drums
On stage, Greg uses a Yamaha Recording Series drumkit with Zildjian cymbals
and a 1962 nickel-plated brass snare drum. Having lost his left hand in
a teenage accident, he uses a prosthetic device designed by Mickey Hart
and cast off the hand of noted session drummer Peter Erskine.
