This page explains how you can join other Zeroids in IRC (Internet Relay
Chat). It's a place where you can "chat" in real time with others in the Zero family.
Folks are listening most hours of the day and the action really gets going around 7 PM
(your time) and continues till late at night. Check it out!!!
WINDOWS INSTRUCTIONS
First, you'll need to download an IRC program that will get you to the chat servers. I like mIRC (Download Here) However, any IRC program will do.
Here are more detailed instructions on downloading for net newbies.
The following instructions are fairly detailed instructions for installing and setting up mIRC. If you choose a different program, you'll have to rely on the included instructions.
mIRC for Windows comes in 16-bit (Windows 3.1) and 32-bit (Windows 95/NT)
flavors. Select the link titled "Download the latest mIRC, IRC Intro or
FAQ" and follow the direction on that page. The mIRC installation program
is an .EXE file, so you won't need to unZIP it.
Once you have downloaded your IRC software, install it. Just run the .EXE
file you downloaded and follow the directions on the screen. It should be
fine if you just stick with the defaults. At some point during this
process, you will need to type in a "Nick", or nickname, that you will use
on IRC. This is the name that you will be known as when you log on. Don't
worry too much about selecting a name as you can easily change it later.
After you have input your user info, select a DALNet server close to you
from the server drop-down list (right above the "Connect to IRC Server!"
button), then click that button. You should see a bunch of stuff scroll by
very quickly, and another window will pop up. This window is the "mIRC
Channels Folder". You'll see a list of well-known IRC channels. There is
a check box at the bottom titled "Pop up folder on connect", which if
unchecked, will not display this window next time you start mIRC. For now,
just close the window.
You'll end up in a window that says something like "Status: Amoeba on
irc.magic.ca". You'll see a single line at the bottom, separated from the
rest of the chat window. On that line, type "/join #zeromusic" (without
the quotes, of course). Another window called "#zeromusic" should pop up,
with a list of all the people in the channel in a column on the right-hand
side. If you see only yourself, with an "@" sign in front of your nick,
that means that you are the only one in the channel at the moment. (The
"@" sign in front means that you are a "channel operator", and have extra
"powers" on that channel, such as the ability to kick or ban unruly users
from the channel.)
MAC INSTRUCTIONS
If you have a Mac, you may want to use IRCle (Download Here
There are instructions on downloading, along with the utility you need to
"expand" the compressed file, if you don't already have it.
There is an excellent info page on IRCle here
which shows you, step-by-step, how to download, install, and configure IRCle.
Finally, you'll need to select a server to connect to. Usually you'll get
the best results, and the shortest "lag", by selecting a server close to your
geographical location. If you have trouble connecting to the closest one,
or experience a noticable delay (or "lag") during chat, you should
experiment with different servers until you find one that works well for you.
There is also a 'photo album' page with pictures of several of the #zeromusic "regulars".
If you get stuck, please send an email to Rich, Tobes, or Coertje.
